chance
People use "chance" to talk about luck, risk, or possibility. They ask for a random pick, a gamble, or an opportunity they hope might work out.
What a model may hear
- random sampling statistics and machine learning
- select items with weighted or uniform probability, or shuffle a dataset
- stochastic process probability theory and physics
- model a system with inherent randomness, like noise or Brownian motion
- probability value mathematics and game design
- treat the word as a numeric probability between 0 and 1
- opportunistic execution operating systems
- schedule a low-priority task when CPU is free
Where people and models part ways
“give me a chance”
Meant: let me try again or reconsider
May be taken as: generate a random number or probability distribution
Say instead: “let me try again or reconsider my request”
“take a chance on this one”
Meant: pick something risky or uncertain
May be taken as: apply random selection with unknown weights
Say instead: “select the option that seems least certain to succeed”
“by chance”
Meant: coincidentally or unexpectedly
May be taken as: interpret as a random sampling operation
Say instead: “unexpectedly or coincidentally”
“not a chance”
Meant: absolutely not, zero possibility
May be taken as: interpret as probability exactly zero in a model where that causes division errors
Say instead: “absolutely not, no possibility”
Tips
- Say "randomly" if you want randomness, not "by chance."
- Say "opportunity" or "try" if you mean a human chance, not a statistical one.
- Specify "probability" with a number if you want a model to calculate odds.
- Avoid "fat chance" and "slim chance" — models may miss the sarcasm or invert the meaning.
- If you want a do-over, say "let me try again" rather than "give me another chance."
Often confused with
